Corgi Beagle Mix - Bogle History

All hybrid or designer dogs are tough to get a good read on as there isn’t much history to them. Breeding specific dogs like this has become common in the last twenty years or so even though I am sure that this mixed breed found it’s share of dogs to the shelter due to accidental breeding. We will take a closer look at the history of both parent breeds below.  If you are looking at breeders for new, designer dogs please beware of Puppy Mills. These are places that mass produce puppies, specifically for profit and don’t care at all about the dogs. If you have a few minutes, please sign our petition to stop puppy mills.

Beagle History:

Dogs of similar size and purpose to the modern Beagle can be traced in Ancient Greece back to around the 5th century BC. Since medieval times, the word beagle was used as a generic description for the smaller hounds, though these dogs differed considerably from the modern breed. Miniature breeds of beagle-type dogs were known from the times of Edward II and Henry VII, who both had packs of Glove Beagles, so named since they were small enough to fit on a glove, and Queen Elizabeth I kept a breed known as a Pocket Beagle, which stood 8 to 9 inches at the shoulder. Small enough to fit in a "pocket" or saddlebag, they rode along on the hunt. The larger hounds would run the prey to ground, then the hunters would release the small dogs to continue the chase through underbrush. Elizabeth I referred to the dogs as her singing beagles and often entertained guests at her royal table by letting her Pocket Beagles cavort amid their plates and cups 19th-century sources refer to these breeds interchangeably and it is possible that the two names refer to the same small variety. Reverend Phillip Honeywood established a Beagle pack in Essex, England in the 1830s and it is believed that this pack formed the basis for the modern Beagle breed.

Corgi History:

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi -Welsh for "dwarf dog" is a cattle herding breed which originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It is one of two breeds known as a Welsh Corgi. The other is the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and both descend from the line that is the northern spitz-type dog. An example of a spitz breed is the Siberian Husky. Another theory is that Pembrokes are descended from the Swedish Vallhunds, which were crossed with the local Welsh herding dogs. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the younger of the two Corgi breeds and is a separate and distinct breed from the Cardigan. The corgi is one of the smallest dogs in the Herding Group. It is said that  Queen Elizabeth II has owned more than 30 during her reign and are her preferred breed. These dogs have been favored by British royalty for more than seventy years, but among British Commoners, have recently fallen into decline in terms of popularity and demand.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi can be traced as far back as 1107 AD. The story goes that the Vikings and Flemish weavers brought the dogs with them as they traveled to settle in Wales. Going back as far as the 10th century, corgis were herding sheep, geese, ducks, horses, and cattle. They are known as one of the oldest herding breed of dogs.

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are becoming more popular in the United States and rank 20th (24th) in American Kennel Club registrations, as of 2015 . However, corgis are now listed as a "vulnerable" breed in the United Kingdom; the decline has been said to be due to a 2007 ban on tail-docking (the practice of cutting off the animal’s tail) in the U.K., as well as the lack of breeders in the U.K.

Corgi Beagle Mix - Bogle Personality

Like all hybrids, you have to look to the parents to get a good read on how they will likely behave. The Beagle is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever encounter and the Corgi is too. This might be one of the most fun loving and friendly dogs that you will ever encounter. This should make a very friendly, family oriented dog. If it takes after the Corgi, they might be an alpha with a strong personality and needs a strong owner with experience who can set themselves as pack leader. Just because they are small doesn’t mean they don’t want to be in charge. They should get along well with other animals if exposed and socialized properly as well. They are somewhat capable of independence, or alone time when the house is noisy or full. She responds well to positive reinforcement, like all dogs. She should be rather affectionate and enjoy spending lots of time with you. Don’t plan on leaving her alone for long periods as he won’t do well alone. She wants to be with the “pack.”

Corgi Beagle Mix - Bogle Health

All dogs have the potential to develop genetic health problems as all breeds are susceptible to some things more than others. However, the one positive thing about getting a puppy is that you can avoid this as much as possible. A breeder should absolutely offer a health guarantee on puppies. If they won’t do this, then look no more and don’t consider that breeder at all. A reputable breeder will be honest and open about health problems in the breed and the incidence with which they occur. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition.

The Dalmatian mixed with the Poodle might be prone to Intervertebral disk disease, eye problems, epilepsy, DM, skin problems, Cystinuria, Hypothyroidism, Beagle Dwarfism, Hip dysplasia, ear infections

Note that these are just common problems in both breeds.

Corgi Beagle Mix - Bogle Care

What are the grooming requirements?

This will be a moderately shedding dog with shorter hair. The Corgi is a more moderate shedder and the beagle sheds like crazy. Either way, get ready to invest in a good vacuum if you want to keep your floors clean! Give them baths as needed, but not so much that you dry out their skin. Never tie your dog up outside - that is inhumane and not fair to him.

What are the exercise requirements?

Plan on taking them for extremely long walks and hikes to keep their energy level down. Both of these are much higher energy dogs. This exercise will keep them from being destructive. A tired dog is a good dog.

What are the training requirements?

This is an intelligent dog that will be a little bit challenging to train. Both of these dogs can be extremely stubborn and are challenging to train at times. The best thing you can do is break the sessions into shorter daily sessions to keep their attention span higher. It might have a prey drive and be disposed to running for and chasing small prey, but if handled properly this can be managed. All dogs respond best to positive reinforcement. So make sure to praise her when she does well. She is an intelligent dog who loves to please, and loves a physical challenge. The more exercise she gets the easier she will be to train. Proper socialization is imperative to all dogs and puppies. Make sure to take her to the park and doggy day care to get her around as many people and dogs as possible.

Corgi Beagle Mix - Bogle Feeding

A lot of times diet is done on a per-dog basis. Each one is unique and has different dietary requirements. Most dogs in the U.S. are overweight, so keep that in mind when feeding them. A mix like this one that is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia should really be on fish oil and glucosamine and chondroitin supplements as soon as possible.

Overfeeding any dog is not a good idea as that can really exacerbate health problems such as elbow and hip dysplasia.

I good diet to look into is a Raw Food Diet.  A raw food diet will be especially good for the Wolf background.
