White German Shepherd Wolf Mix

The White German Shepherd Wolf Mix is a mixed Dog Breed between the White German Shepherd and the Wolf. It is in effect a Wolf mixed with German Shepherd. The typical hybrid is a Timber Wolf or Black German Shepherd Mix. Getting a wolf hybrid should not be taken lightly.

The White German Shepherd Dog is really just a derivative of the German Shepherd dog breed. The white German Shepherds are usually bred to have an overall softer, more sensitive, and more mellow personality than traditionally colored (black and tan or sable) German Shepherds. Due to this lighter temperament, White German Shepherds are typically not used in protection dog sports such as schutzhund. A White German Shepherd can still be a good watchdog, but White German Shepherds are not typically aggressive.

However, they are still a shepherd and are very strong willed and take capable and competent owners that are willing to take the couple of hours a day for exercise that they need and deserve

While we really recommend that you acquire one through a rescue, we understand that some people might go through a breeder to get their White German Shepherd mixed with Wolf puppy. That is, if they have any for sale. Always screen your breeders as much as possible to ensure that you are getting as high a quality dog as is possible. If intentionally bred, typically it is a White German Shepherd Wolf mix.

White German Shepherd Wolf Mix History

White German Shepherd

In 1899, a German named Von Stephanitz was attending a dog show when he was shown a dog named Hektor Linksrhein. Von Stephanitz had in his mind what a good working dog should be and a few generations of breeding fulfilled what Hektor envisioned. He was pleased with the strength of the dog and was so taken by the animal’s intelligence, loyalty, and beauty, that he purchased him immediately. He immediately changed the name to Horand von Grafrath and Von Stephanitz founded the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (Society for the German Shepherd Dog). Horand von Grafrath is known to be the first German Shepherd Dog.

The White Shepherd emerged from white-coat lines of the German Shepherd  dog in Canada and the United States and from European imports. Though their coat colours vary, the German Shepherd  and the white German Shepherd are the same dog. The White Shepherd breed of the German Shepherd  was recognized officially by the United Kennel Club on April 14, 1999.  White Shepherds often have longer fur than the traditional German Shepherd, and do not always have a double coat. White Shepherds typically have an overall more square and upright look and lighter frame as compared to the show lines of German Shepherds, and they have very different side gait when comparing movement.

Wolf

Here is some info on the Grey Wolf:  Gray wolves were once common throughout all of North America, but were exterminated in most areas of the United States by the mid 1930s. Today, their range has been reduced to Canada, Alaska, the Great Lakes, northern Rockies and Pacific Northwest. The famous introduction of wolves in 1995 to Yellowstone National Park was a huge win for conservation. Wolves live, travel and hunt in packs of 7 to 8 animals on average. Packs include the mother and father wolves (called the alphas), their pups and older offspring. The alpha female and male are typically the pack leaders that track and hunt prey, choose den sites and establish the pack's territory. Wolves develop strong social bonds within their packs. Wolves have a complex communication system ranging from barks and whines to growls and howls. While they don't actually howl at the moon, they are more active at dawn and dusk, and they do howl more when it's lighter at night, which occurs more often when the moon is full.

White German Shepherd Wolf Mix Personality

Like all hybrids, you have to look to the parents to get a good read on how they will likely behave. This could obviously make for a very powerful and strong breed that will have a lot of energy and a high prey drive. Both of these parent breeds have higher energy and a very strong prey and drive instincts. They should get along well with other animals if exposed and socialized properly as well. They are somewhat capable of independence, or alone time when the house is noisy or full. She responds well to positive reinforcement, like all dogs. She should be rather affectionate and enjoy spending lots of time with you. Don’t plan on leaving her alone for long periods as he won’t do well alone. She wants to be with the “pack.”

White German Shepherd Wolf Mix Health

All dogs have the potential to develop genetic health problems as all breeds are susceptible to some things more than others. However, the one positive thing about getting a puppy is that you can avoid this as much as possible. A breeder should absolutely offer a health guarantee on puppies. If they won’t do this, then look no more and don’t consider that breeder at all. A reputable breeder will be honest and open about health problems in the breed and the incidence with which they occur. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition.

The White German Shepherd mixed with the Wolf might be prone to Elbow Dysplasia, Hip Dysplasia, Heart Conditions

Note that these are just common problems in both breeds.

White German Shepherd Wolf Mix Care

What are the grooming requirements?

This will be a tougher dog to groom as both of these dogs (wolf) have pretty long hair. Be prepared to brush them a few times a week. Either way, get ready to invest in a good vacuum if you want to keep your floors clean! Give them baths as needed, but not so much that you dry out their skin. Never tie your dog up outside - that is inhumane and not fair to him.

What are the exercise requirements?

Plan on taking them for extremely long walks and hikes to keep their energy level down. This exercise will keep them from being destructive. A tired dog is a good dog. A tired dog is a good dog though. Never tie your dog up outside - that is inhumane and not fair to him.

What are the training requirements?

This is an intelligent dog that will be a little bit challenging to train. They are going to want to take the alpha position and need someone with a firm, strong, hand that can let them know their place. The best thing you can do is break the sessions into shorter daily sessions to keep their attention span higher. It might have a prey drive and be disposed to running for and chasing small prey, but if handled properly this can be managed. All dogs respond best to positive reinforcement. So make sure to praise her when she does well. She is an intelligent dog who loves to please, and loves a physical challenge. The more exercise she gets the easier she will be to train. Proper socialization is imperative to all dogs and puppies. Make sure to take her to the park and doggy day care to get her around as many people and dogs as possible.

White German Shepherd Wolf Mix Feeding

A lot of times diet is done on a per-dog basis. Each one is unique and has different dietary requirements. Most dogs in the U.S. are overweight. A mix like this one that is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia should really be on fish oil and glucosamine and chondroitin supplements as soon as possible.

Overfeeding any dog is not a good idea as that can really exacerbate health problems such as elbow and hip dysplasia. The wolf hybrid will certainly appreciate the raw diet.

A good diet to look into is Raw Food Diet. A raw food diet will be especially good for the Wolf background.
