The name Haleakala does not refer to the whole volcano. The ancient Hawaiians used the name to refer to the summit area only. They did not have a name for the whole mountain.
The East Maui Volcano is dormant, not extinct. This means that scientists believe it is just "resting", and that it will erupt again in the future. They estimate that the volcano erupted about 10 times in the last thousand years. The last time was maybe 200 or 300 years ago. Those lava flows are still visible as dark rock near the Southwest Rift Zone of the mountain, along with some cinder cones.
